The Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises is offering the Deep Tech Award 2019 in conjunction with SIBB e.V., the Association of the Information and Communication Industry in Berlin and Brandenburg, as part of the Project Future state initiative and the log in. berlin campaign, the anchor project.
The Deep Tech Award 2019 is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The world metropolis of Berlin has developed into a leading location for information and communication technology in Germany and Europe. Information and communication technologies are key technologies for Berlin as a business location. They drive innovation, increase productivity and contribute to securing economic growth, prosperity and jobs in the future.
The growth rates of the Berlin ICT sector continue to be above average. In 2016, the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce registered up to 2,242 new companies in the IT sector.
The ICT sector is also at the forefront of digital transformation. In no other sector do 81 per cent of companies already generate more than 60 per cent of their turnover digitally.
In addition to good software, innovative hardware is above all crucial for the successful design of digital transformation.
As a cosmopolitan, young and dynamic metropolis, Berlin offers the best location and development conditions for the start-ups of the digital economy and the large number of software development specialists. In addition to start-ups, many highly specialized small and medium-sized companies have been successfully asserting themselves on the market for a long time. Like tech festivals and conferences, accelerators and incubators are the expression of a flourishing hardware scene full of a spirit of optimism.
The new connectivity also presents the IT industry with a clear opportunity to leverage immense value creation potential with innovative solutions and products in areas such as industry, trade, logistics, energy, mobility and healthcare. It is becoming increasingly clear that equipping objects with sensors, actuators and software and networking them holds enormous market potential.
The increasing demand for products and solutions in the ICT sector can develop into an important growth driver for the region. At the same time, the development of appropriate solutions and products for companies is associated with special challenges, such as long development processes, high innovation costs and high risk, due to the combination of hardware and software components.
With the Deep Tech Award 2019, we wish to recognize the innovative strength of up-and-coming start-ups and established companies and generate additional attention for ICT solutions and products "Made in Berlin".
Prizes will be awarded for application-oriented and proven solutions as well as products based on software and/or hardware which are characterized by a high degree of innovation and great future potential.
Solutions and products can come from the following areas:
The competition is endowed with prize money totaling up to 60,000 euros (financed by funds from the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises as well as EU/ERDF funds), and several "Deep Tech Stars" will be awarded. The winners of the competition and their products and solutions will be communicated via the media of the organizer and the cooperation partners. The award ceremony will take place on April 3, 2019 as part of the SIBB Digital Platforms & Technologies Forum in Berlin. The judges’ decision is final.
The following criteria will be taken into account in the evaluation by the independent jury:
